Professor Phyllis Berger is a Physiotherapist and a qualified Acupuncturist working both in private practice and the University of the Witwatersrand.

Since qualifying she has spent many years involved in pain management – both as a member of the South African Pain Council and as the Chairperson of the South Gauteng Pain Group. She has also been involved with the International Association for the Study of Pain since 1996 as a member and contributing to the Scientific Pain Committee for the 13th World Congress on Pain, in Montreal, 2010. She is also chairperson of the Acupuncture Group of the South African Society of Physiotherapy.

Her main interest has been to discover methods within electrotherapy and acupuncture that mimic the effects of the medications prescribed in modern medicine without the negative side effects. She has also developed innovative methods to assist her patients in achieving pain relief and taking control of their lives by educating them in pain neuroscience with booklets and with Pain Support Groups. Professor Berger has many publications in both national and International Journals.
